Adding Connections in LinkedIn (with Screen Shots)

I have a friend in Florida who wants to grow her online presence... and she wants to connect with many of the hundreds of contacts she has in her Top Producer Database.  If you've never used LinkedIn, and you are trying to find people that you have in your database as Stephen, and the person actually goes by Steve, well it can get confusing.  So I'm creating this post as a way to help walk through that process.

LinkedIn for newbies

Okay - so notice I put in Stephen Edwards FL (figuring he'd be in Florida) and it brought up a Steven Goldstein at SunTrust Bank and a bunch of other stuff that doesn't make sense...  My friend doesn't have many LinkedIn Connections yet.  The system is looking for a Stephen Edwards that she might be "connected" to.  Be sure you are on the PEOPLE drop down and not the COMPANY (I've done that!).  Since this doesn't look like the guy you are looking for...

LinkedIn has Advanced Features

Then you click the Advanced Button

Add Important words like Location

In this case we are looking for someone who is located near you in Florida... but we could easily be looking for someone at a certain company, or an Industry.  Maybe you want to see who is on LinkedIn that works for a company that just announced they are moving to the area!  Maybe you need a referral for a client that wants to know who is involved in Alternative Medicine in your area.

Choose the Contact

Couple of Things To Notice

The focus for my friend, right now, is to connect to her database... so she would click Add Steve.  But if you notice, for instance, that her contact doesn't have very many connections - that might be a great reason to follow back up with them, or send them a recommendation!  If you are connecting to someone because you are both in the same "Group" and share interests - I would always look to see what you have in common with this person by reading their profile.

Always add a personal message

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS add a personal message when you are sending a "Connection" request!  This absolutely goes for Facebook as well!  Tell this person why you are contacting them!

We just had our REBarCamp in Raleigh a few weeks ago - and tons of people have simple questions and just need a quick visual to make it easier.  So if you have questions about adding Connections on LinkedIn, or mortgage loans in NC, or how to do something on AR, Call Me!  Eleanor Warren-Thorne, 919-649-5057 @isellmoney

What is really crazy about this post, is that I know Steven Goldstein from SunTrust Bank very well!

all the social media sites are confusing. they are all so different with how you "link" to people you know.... it would be great if they were all more similar and you could import from each one to the other..

Great post, Eleanor. Did your friend try uploading her contacts into LinkedIn to see if the system could automatically find LI members?

YIPPEE!!  Thanks Marti - you have no idea how big my smile is! 8o)  Really!

Jackie - great point.  My friend has a LARGE number of International Contacts, and she realy wanted to take this opportunity to be selective and look through the database. But uploading them is much faster!

Great advice/instructions - especially the part about adding a personal message to your Connection Request! Not the canned LinkedIn message!  Congrats on the Sharp Cookie feature!

We knew you were a sharp cookie, indeed! Happy you are getting recognized. I need to spend more time on LinkedIn but I just can't figure out why (I need to pick Martin's brain!). Congrats!
